How to Stay Cool During A Heatwave

With all the debate about global warming, there’s still no consensus on whether the issue is real or not. What’s real though, is that when a heatwave is upon us, the days get almost unbearably hot.

As the recent DC heat wave, California heatwave and other extremely hot weather spreading across the country shows, you can’t be too prepared.

Staying cool during hot weather is more than just adding a few air-conditioning (AC) units to your house.

Aside from AC, though, there are several other steps you can take to keep yourself cool during really hot weather.

Easing the discomfort of extreme heatwave

That said, if you do have AC in your house, use it… but be aware that your electricity bill will skyrocket if your consumption is uncontrolled.

• For those who don’t wish to use AC to cool the entire house, you may choose to get the MIDEA 3-in-1 Portable Air Conditioner to cool just one room (whichever one you choose).

It’s relatively small, portable and can effectively cool a room without consuming too much electricity.

In fact, it would be wiser to stay in a smaller room and keep it cool than to try cooling the entire house.

• Another step you could take would be to insulate the windows. This can be easily done by sticking some Reflectix Series Foil Insulation on your windows.

Reflectix Foil Insulation

All you’ll need to do is trim the reflective sheet according to the size and shape of your windows and affix it with some tape. The shiny, reflective sheet will deflect the sun’s rays and help to keep the heat out of your home. It will not keep it out totally, but it does help to alleviate the problem greatly.

• Besides an AC unit or reflective foil, one way to cool a room/house will be to circulate the air inside the house.

This will help to cool things and while it may seem like you’re just blowing hot air around, it does help to prevent the house from feeling like a sauna during a heatwave.

You may use the Lasko High Velocity Pro Pivoting Utility Fan to blow the hot air out of your house. What does that mean?

Imagine that your house is like an air-tight container. As the sun keeps shining on it, the air within the house will get hotter and hotter because it’s trapped within the house.

When you use the Lasko fan, you’ll be able to blow out a lot of the hot air in your house by directing it towards a window. The hot air in your house will get ‘extracted’ out and the breeze emitted by the fan will help with cooling.

• In addition to cooling just your surroundings, you should also pay attention to yourself and look at ways you can stay cool.

It goes without saying that during extremely hot days, you must stay hydrated. Still, instead of just drinking water at room temperature, you’d do better with cool, icy water.

The problem with iced water is that you can’t place it out for too long before it reaches room temperature.

The best way to deal with this issue will be to use the Iron Flask Sports Water Bottle.

It holds 32 oz. of water (or any drink you prefer) and has 3 different types of lids to suit your preferences. The biggest advantage of this flask is that it keeps your drink cold for up to 24 hours.

Made out of stainless steel and coming in a wide variety of colors, this flask is not only useful, but stylish too.

So you can stay cool and look cool even if it’s scorching hot outside.

• Here’s another way you can stay cool at home. You need to cool your blood.

What? OK. Time out. Let me expand on that statement…

Your neck has 2 carotid arteries. One on the left side and one on the right. When you’re feeling hot, the blood in your body is hot too. By cooling the blood, your entire body will feel cooler.

Doing this is simple. All you need is an ice pack such as the ICEWRAPS Reusable Ice Pack.

ICEWRAPS Reusable ice Packs

          •  Place the ice pack in the refrigerator until it’s cold.
          •  Then take it out and place it on your neck at the spot where your carotid arteries run beneath.

This will cool the blood being transported in your body and you’ll immediately feel better. Ideally you should have 2 ice wraps so you can place one on each side of your neck.

While you could do this with a bag of peas, by using the ICEWRAPS Ice Pack, you’ll feel better because of the soft fabric cover. It sure beats having cold plastic (that smells of peas) pressed up against your neck.

This ice pack doesn’t require a towel. It’s reusable, washable, flexible and durable. You really can’t ask for a better ice pack – and it’s inexpensive too.

• Last but certainly not least, you may choose to carry a portable, hand-held misting fan wherever you go.

          •  If you’re feeling hot, just use the fan and it’ll spray a mist of water on your face to keep you cool.

Keeping some facial tissue will help you dry off any water if droplets collect on your neck.

The fan is extra effective when used in an air-conditioned environment.

During Sometimes when you get home and turn on the AC, you may still be feeling hot.

Using this personal misting fan will help accelerate the cooling process.

The items mentioned above will go a long way to cooling you off in extreme hot weather. Surely it’s worth easing your discomfort to check them out.
